If you have a roommate, you may not have considered adding them to you auto policy. But it’s not a bad idea in certain situations. White Oak Insurance LLC, serving Milford, CT, explains.
When Should You Add Your Roommate to Your Auto Insurance Policy?
Connecticut state laws state every licensed driver who has access to an insured vehicle must be named on the car’s auto policy. According to the Connecticut Department of Insurance, this is because they could borrow the car and then become responsible for an accident. If you can show that your roommate has auto insurance of their own, you can remove their name from your auto insurance policy.
In addition to providing proof of insurance, you may be able to demonstrate that your roommate qualifies for a “named driver exclusion.” If the agency determines that someone qualifies for this exclusion, it means that person is excluded from coverage under your policy. If an excluded driver were to use your car and have an accident, the insurance company would not cover the accident. There are drawbacks to naming someone as an excluded driver, so discuss this with your insurance agent.
